How and why to build a capsule wardrobe?

So here is the post about the capsule wardrobe as I mentioned in the last post.

Frankly, I started this, because if I’m lucky, next year I’m gonna go to dormitory so I had to decide what clothes I want to wear in two years term. And on Monday for the first time when I ironed my clothes and I couldn’t put them back in the wardrobe. That point I knew I had to change.

Here you can see what my wardrobe looks like right now. At the bottom of the picture there are the hangers left over the clothes I threw away. And now, let’s see how to build your capsule wardorbe.

Step One: First, you need to know what clothes are the best for your lifestyle. In this wardrobe I have boho crop-tops for a summer full of roadtrips – as it usually is -, button-ups and simple long-sleeved tops for school and some more serious, elegant pieces for a theatre night or – be realistic – final examination. You can find some very interesting workbooks on the Internet which you can use for creating your own capsule.

Step Two: You need to decide if you want your capsule for one, two, three or four seasons, set up a limit and stick to is. Mine was 111 for three seasons and now I have 109 pieces of clothes. I don’t count my home stuff, gym clothes and lingerie here. This is an other important decision you have to make.

Step Three: When you arrive to this point, you have to decide what colors you want to wear. When you search for the word capsule wardrobe you usually find black-white-grey clothes. But you must know – and you can see it up there – that you can wear colors. You just need to chose what colors work best for you and keep/buy them. If you are a fire person – this is what I call those who like to wear the warm colors and look good in them – keep the warm colors, and if you are the icy one -those who like cold colors – keep those. As you can see down there I kept both, because I look good in both group of colors.

Step Four: When you are done with the two steps above, you have to take you clothes out of your wardrobe. Everything. Yes, I know that sounds horrible, but you have to make sure to do it. Then, when you are done, you have to make three groups:

  • Group One: You want and going to keep it

  • Group Two: You don’t need them/won’t keep them

  • Group Three: You don’t know what to do with them.

Then you have to put the first group back to your wardrobe and throw the second one away. Going back to the third group, you need to take every piece in your hands and think about what are the advantages and disadvantages of that exact one. If you can list more advantages, keep it. If not… you know what to do.

Step Five: Now you have to go on counting your clothes. If you have less than your limit, you can decide if shopping some pieces which you can add, or leave it and you are done. If you have equal, you are done. If you have more, you need to throw away some more pieces: you can chose them by how much you wore them before, how many outfits you can make out of them, or something like these. If you could do this, you are done.

My experiences:

  • You can stick to some pieces of clothes, but if they are too big as mine were since I lost soooooo much weight , or too short, or too small, or you didn’t wear it for ages then they need to be thrown away.

  • If you have clothes that are in acceptable condition, you can give them to charity or you can sale them. That’s what I’m going to do… And some of those clothes will go to my friends.

  • Some people may tell you that it will take too much time, but when I was working on this, I finished in three hours. You just have to be firm that you want to end this.

My tips:

  • If you are indecisive, you can ask a friend of yours to help you with this and in return you can give them your clothes.

  • The most important thing is to stick to your plan.

  • Go and search for capsules.

Why you should give it a try:

  • You get a closer look at what looks good on you.

  • You can find some pieces that would be like treasure. Literally.

  • You can get rid of clothes that are useless for you and you couldn’t throw them away.

  • You can find a new style for yourself.

I think that’s all for now. If you liked this post, share, comment and follow me for everyday information on Instagram! Bye!
